Are online PDF tools safe? How to check that your file is not uploaded
Updated 16 October 2026
Contracts, payslips, medical letters and ID scans are exactly the files people need to merge, shrink or sign, and exactly the files they should not hand to strangers. Before you use an online PDF tool, it helps to know where your file actually goes.
What most online PDF tools do
Most sites upload your file to their servers, process it there, and let you download the result. The file then sits on a company’s computer for a while. Reputable services delete it after a few hours, encrypt the transfer and say so in their privacy policy. Even then, you rely on their promise, their security and their staff, and on the laws of the country where the servers are.
What browser-based tools do differently
Modern browsers can run demanding software themselves, using WebAssembly and background workers. A tool built this way downloads its program code once, like any web page, and then processes your file on your own device. The file never leaves it. That is how every tool on this site works.
Check it yourself in two minutes
You do not have to take anyone’s word for it. Your browser can show every request a page makes.
- On a computer, open the tool’s page, for example Merge PDF.
- Open the developer tools: F12, or Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows, Linux), or Cmd+Option+I (Mac). Select the Network tab.
- Use the tool with your file as usual.
- Look at the list. An upload is a request with the method POST or PUT whose size is about as large as your file. If you only see small GET requests for the page’s own code, the file stayed on your device.
A second test: after the page has loaded, switch off Wi-Fi and use the tool. If it still works, it cannot have sent your file anywhere. Tools on this site keep working offline once you have used them.
How it works explains the details, including what the site does load.
What still deserves care
- Ads are third-party content. Pages with ads load code from ad companies. The tools never give your file or its name to that code, but ads are not part of the tool.
- Your device matters too. A file processed locally is only as safe as the device it is on.
- Downloads go where you save them. The result lands in your downloads folder, like any download.
Used this way, an online tool can be as private as desktop software, without installing anything.
